SANDBOX SOLDIER
As I lie here in the sandbox, willing sleep befall my
eyes,
I look above and wonder what awaits beyond the skies.
Will I be accepted at St. Peter’s pearly gate,
Or maybe be rejected and go to a fiery fate?
You see I am a soldier fighting in a distant land.
I see the oil fires burning and my eyes are filled with
sand.
We came to stop a tyrant. He’s a bully far too strong.
So, we must end the reign of terror, right this awful
wrong.
Oh, Lord, my rest is over and to battle I must go.
Won’t you please go with me as I meet the dreaded foe?
And Lord, can you forgive me if I have to take a life
To save my own as on I go to free this land of strife?
My prayer has not yet ended, Lord for still I need you
near.
For along with orders from command, your voice I want to
hear;
Encourage and reassure me that you still in my heart abide
And comfort me and love me and always be my guide.
Now I must turn to my duties Lord, but I know that you are
there
Silently watching o’er me and keeping me in your care.
But if I must give my life dear Lord, I’ll know you
thought it best.
Then please be with my family, let them know I’m safe at
rest.
For I cannot give my life dear Lord, for any greater
cause,
Than to free a tortured people of a tyrant, who knows no
laws.
Who also doesn’t know you Lord, and the way that you can
love.
And has no hope to have the peace I’ll have in Heaven
above.
